During the Fall, Pumpkin Pie Spice is the flavor of the season! Of course Pumpkin Pie Spice can be used for making pies, but it can also be used to flavor pancake batter, quick breads and muffins, pumpkin smoothies, butternut squash soup and can even be folded into sweetened some whipped cream to serve on top of pumpkin or apple pie! If you don’t have any Pumpkin Pie Spice in your spice cupboard, you can make your own! The nice thing about making your own spice blends is that you can customize them to your own taste. The recipe below is a starting point, but you can increase or decrease any of the ingredients you wish!
Here’s what you need to get started:
4 tablespoons ground cinnamon
3 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
Measure the ingredients and stir together until uniformly combined. (Make adjustments to the amounts if desired – you could also add some ground Allspice if you like!)
Store in a small airtight container or jar. (This will keep for up to a year.)
