Dulce de Leche – made in the crockpot

It’s almost miraculous how you can put sweetened condensed milk in the crockpot and 10 hours later, you have this delicious, thick, creamy Dulce de Leche. This is good for so many things. Have you ever tried warm Dulce de Leche on top of vanilla ice cream? Oh man! I have a recipe for Dulce de Leche bars that are amazing! See the bottom of my post for the recipe. Here’s how to make Dulce de Leche in the crockpot.

To make 2 pint jars, you will need:

3 cans sweetened condensed milk (NOT evaporated milk)

2 clean pint jars with lids

1 large crockpot

Pour 1 1/2 cans of the sweetened condensed milk into each of the pint jars and screw on the lid. Stand them up in the crockpot and fill with water up to the necks of the jars. Set the crockpot on low heat, and place the lid on the crockpot. Cook on low heat for 9-10 hours or until the Dulce de Leche is cooked to your liking. It should be a beautiful caramel color. Remove the jars from the hot water using tongs or a hot pad. Unscrew the lids and stir until creamy. Allow to cool and refrigerate until needed. Use within 2 weeks.

Here is my recipe for Dulce de Leche Bars:

1 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 cups quick cooking oats

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup butter, softened (do not use margarine!)

Preheat the oven to 350°. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Use a pastry cutter to cut in the softened butter until the mixture is crumbly. Press 3/4 of the mixture into the bottom of a glass 13×9 pan. Bake 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with: 1 cup milk chocolate chips then drizzle with about 1 1/4 cups of warm Dulce de Leche. Top with the remaining crumb mixture. Press lightly with fingers. Bake an additional 22-24 minutes or until golden. Cool 10 minutes and run a knife around the edge to loosen. Allow to continue cooling. When cool, cut into bars.
