Grandma’s Hot Wassail

Is there anything more comforting than a mug of Hot Wassail? If you’ve never had wassail, it is a must try recipe for the holidays. Wassail is a delicious hot mulled cider, with plenty of tasty spices. This wassail recipe uses apple cider, orange juice and pink lemonade. (I like to throw in a handful of cinnamon red hot candies for added color and flavor!)

It’s the perfect beverage to serve at a holiday party because it smells so good while it’s simmering on the stove top.

Here’s my recipe!

In a large pot, combine and bring to a boil:

2 cups sugar
8 cups water
20 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
1 ginger root, sliced

(If you prefer, you can add *ground spices in place of the whole cloves, cinnamon sticks and ginger root – then, there’s no need to strain it!  When I make it this way, I add 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves and 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger. If you like it spicier, add more according to your taste.)

Boil 2 minutes. Strain (*you don’t need to strain it if you make it with the ground spices.)

Then add:

8 c. orange juice (not concentrate!)
4 c. pink lemonade (not concentrate!)
1 gallon apple cider
a handful of cinnamon red hots candy

Bring back to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until candies are dissolved. Serve hot.
